UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation Delivers 2007 Gil Nickel Humanitarian Award, Honors Leading Lady Vintners and Chefs
Event Highlights $1 Million Gift for Melanoma Research in Memory of Far Niente Proprietor Gil Nickel
UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation delivered the 2007 Gil Nickel Humanitarian Award and honored leading lady vintners and chefs from Napa, Sonoma and Los Angeles at “Taste for a Cure,” its annual Hollywood gala on Saturday evening, June 16, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
The award recipient was Jay Sures, partner and board member of United Talent Agency, a leading entertainment industry talent and literary agency. Sures was honored for his commitment to supporting world-class cancer research at UCLA.

Joy Sterling (Iron Horse Vineyards), Beth Novak Milliken (Spottswood Estate Vineyard and Winery), Beth Nickel (Nickel & Nickel), Margaret Duckhorn (Duckhorn Wine Company), Ashley Heisey (Long Meadow Ranch, Oakville Ranch and Marelle Syrah) and Stephanie Putnam (Far Niente) were presented with Riedel decanters at the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation's "Taste for a Cure." - Photo by Jesse Grant

The evening also celebrated the Nickel family’s efforts, along with the V Foundation for Cancer Research, to raise $1 million for UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC). The funds will be used to establish the V Foundation - Gil Nickel Fellowship for Melanoma Research to train a new generation of promising young scientists who will go on to conduct leading-edge melanoma research at UCLA and other top institutions nationwide. The fellowship was created in memory of Gil Nickel, proprietor of Napa Valley’s Far Niente winery, who died of melanoma in October 2003.
The Gil Nickel Humanitarian Award was developed by the foundation in 2004 to honor persons who have dedicated themselves to supporting cancer research initiatives. Past recipients include Alex Wallau, president of ABC network operations and administration, and actors Andy Garcia and Edward James Olmos.
