Teeing Off with Tiger

Far Niente has long been a supporter of the Tiger Woods Foundation, providing the wine for the pro-am awards dinner prior to Tiger’s annual Target World Challenge golf tournament every December at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California. Over the years, a warm friendship between Tiger’s team and Far Niente has developed.

The friendship resulted this year in an invitation for Far Niente President Larry Maguire to play in the first annual Earl Woods Memorial Pro-Am, on July 4, prior to the start of the AT&T National tournament at Congressional Country Club in Washington, DC.

Larry, who admits to being not too regular of a golfer, practiced his play at every opportunity before the tournament. His foursome, which coincidentally included John Deitz, the president of Republic National Distributing Company, our distributor in the DC/Virginia area, and Steve Golueke, the owner of Cranbrook Liquor in Maryland, selected PGA Tour Pro Fred Funk, one of the most recognizable names and personalities in professional golf, as their pro team member.

After a long, rainy 18 holes of play, and after all of the 52 teams who completed the course turned in their results, Team Far Niente prevailed to post the best score of the day and take home the trophy from the first annual Earl Woods Memorial Pro-Am! Larry just hopes he is invited back next year to defend the title.
